Extension to North Park Villa

Scalloway

North Park Villa was built at the end of the 19th century and sits among a group of mature trees in the village of Scalloway.  The current owners have outgrown the existing two bedroom house and were looking to add two further bedrooms along with a larger dining and living space.  The house sits within the Scalloway Conservation Area and the most prominent view is from the adjacent Fraser Park to the South.  The proposals for extending the property involved creating the two new bedrooms from the existing living room and kitchen within the original house to avoid any structural alterations to the existing building and uses an existing door opening to create the access through to the new extension.  Due to the slope of the site a split level extension was designed with the new kitchen and bathroom on the level of the existing house along with a new front and back entrance porch which will bring visitors immediately in to the main living spaces.  On the lower level a new dining area and living room are situated with large patio doors giving access out to the attractive woodland garden beyond.  The upper level will provide useful storage space with the flexibility to provide further accommodation in future should the family require it.  Large South facing windows were incorporated into the new extension along with roof lights to create a light airy space which contrasts the cosy traditional feel of the existing house.  The new extension is clad externally with a mixture of natural larch cladding and dark grey profile metal cladding to give a contemporary feel which sits sympathetically alongside the original house.
